3M Electrically Conductive Double-Sided Tape 9793KT Series

Main features

  • Typical Z-axis electrical resistance`
  • Typical expected shielding effectiveness is 40-60 dB
  • Ten thicknesses from 130 to 500 µm

Product Description

3M-9793KT is an XYZ-axis electrically conductive double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tape that combines conductive acrylic PSA with a porous conductive foam matrix. The tape creates an adhesive electrical path between joined substrates and is used in grounding and EMI shielding in equipment and electronic components. Ten thickness variants from 130 to 500 µm provide options for different assembly geometries, with a transparent PET release liner supplied for handling before application. Product selection should consider thickness, adhesion target, surface condition and the pressure needed to develop sufficient adhesive contact and electrical connection.

Key features

  • XYZ-axis conductive construction: Conductive acrylic PSA and a porous conductive foam matrix form the electrically conductive tape structure.
  • Z-axis electrical resistance: 0.01-0.25 Ω under 3M ETM-12 test conditions.
  • EMI shielding performance: Typical expected shielding effectiveness of 40-60 dB through the tape thickness using standard EMI shielding test methods.
  • Thickness range: Ten variants from 130 to 500 µm support different assembly geometries.
  • Adhesion to stainless steel: Face- and back-side target values range from 1000 to 2500 gf/inch by thickness under ASTM D1000.

Applications / Suitable for

Thickness and adhesion options

The 9793KT series is offered in ten thickness variants. Face- and back-side adhesion targets to stainless steel are identical for each listed variant, allowing thickness and the corresponding adhesion target to be reviewed together during initial selection.

Adhesion values are target/typical data measured to stainless steel in accordance with ASTM D1000 and are not specification limits.

Application guidance

Application and bonding process

Bond strength depends on adhesive-to-surface contact, substrate type and surface condition. Firm pressure after assembly is also used to develop wet-out and engage the conductive adhesive with the substrates to establish electrical connection. Pressure, dwell time and moderate heat are process variables to evaluate for the specific assembly.

Application temperature: Tape application below 10°C (50°F) is not suggested.
Surface preparation: Bonding surfaces should be clean, dry and well unified. Isopropyl alcohol or heptane are cited as typical cleaning solvents; follow the solvent manufacturer's precautions and directions for use.
Pressure and dwell: Apply 5-15 psi after assembly using a roller, metal bar or finger pressure. A suggested initial DOE range is 5-15 psi for 2-5 seconds at 21-38°C.
Optional heat: Heat in the 38-60°C range may be evaluated simultaneously with pressure to improve wetting, final bond strength and electrical conductivity.
Adhesion build: Up to 24-72 hours may be required to reach final adhesion values.

Firm pressure after assembly develops adhesive contact and engages the conductive adhesive with the substrates.

Storage and Handling

Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture when the tape is stored in roll form, in its original packaging, at 10-25°C (50-77°F) and less than 60% relative humidity. After removal from the original packaging, converted, shipped and stored material should remain within the prescribed temperature and humidity controls. If the release liner is exchanged during converting, test the replacement liner with the tape; transferred release agents can reduce tack, adhesion, electrical performance and shelf life.

Final performance

Electrical and EMI performance

Values shown are representative/typical and are not specification limits. Electrical resistance and shielding performance depend on contact and test conditions.

Property Value Unit Method / condition
Z-axis electrical resistance 0.01-0.25 Ω 3M ETM-12; 10 mm x 10 mm contact area, one pass with a 2 kg rubber roller, 20-minute dwell, then DC resistance measurement.
Shielding effectiveness 40-60 dB Typical expected range through the tape thickness using standard EMI shielding test methods. Result depends on conductive-layer construction, adhesive contact, surface smoothness and test frequency.
